Chapter 1 (View and download in a PDF format) (329KB)
Chapter 1 presents a survey of the literature, outlining the three main phonological properties of extra-sentential elements (prosodic independence, tonal subordination, and asymmetry), and offers a proposal for analysing them as thematic links and tails.
Chapter 2 (View and download in a PDF format) (435KB)
Chapter 2 presents a phonological description of the phrasing and intonation of the main categories of extra-sentential elements.
Chapter 3 (View and download in a PDF format) (408KB)
Chapter 3 describes three production experiments testing the hypothesis that right-dislocations are deaccented. The first two experiments aim at obtaining an expansion of the speaker’s pitch range using masking noise (Lombard speech). The third experiment varies the degree of prominence of segmentally identical syllables.
Chapter 4 (View and download in a PDF format) (467KB)
Chapter 4 describes a production experiment investigating whether there are significant differences in the frequency of accentuation of sentential adverbs in English and Catalan.
